The main route of transmission of the new influenza A(H1N1) virus seems to be similar to seasonal influenza, via droplets that are expelled by speaking, sneezing or coughing. You can prevent getting infected by avoiding close contact with people who show influenza-like symptoms (trying to maintain a distance of about 1 metre if possible) and taking the following measures:

Local H1N1 cases nearly double to 52

The Health Ministry pledged Thursday to do everything possible to curb the spread of the H1N1 variant of influenza A, as the number of confirmed cases nationwide almost doubled to 52 in the last couple of days.
Minister Siti Fadillah Supari said her office was on high alert, after 24 more people from across the country were reported to have contracted the flu virus.

After delaying action for weeks as the novel H1N1 influenza virus took hold in far-flung parts of the globe, the World Health Organization (WHO) today declared a full-fledged pandemic, formally recognizing that the virus is becoming a global contagion.
WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan announced the long-expected move to pandemic alert phase 6, meaning that the virus has caused sustained community outbreaks in more than one global region. The move comes amid growing signs of community transmission in Australia, Chile, and the United Kingdom—far from the epidemic's birthplace in Mexico and the United States.

The WHO on Tuesday said it was "getting closer" to declaring the H1N1 (swine) flu outbreak to be a pandemic, as the virus continues to spread to people outside of North America, and in populations "as far apart as Britain, Spain, Japan, Chile and Australia," the AP/Washington Post reports (Jordans, AP/Washington Post, 6/2).

In response to concerns from various governments about the possible effects of declaring a full-scale influenza pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) will call on outside experts to consider whether to revise the agency's definitions of pandemic alert phases, a WHO official announced today.
The spread of the novel H1N1 flu virus in Mexico, the United States, and Canada prompted the WHO to raise its pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5 on Apr 29. Despite signs of possible community-level transmission in other parts of the world, such as Japan and Spain, the WHO has not raised the alert to phase 6, defined as sustained community transmission in more than one global region.

Nine more flu A/H1N1 cases crop up in Asia-Pacific region on Saturday

The Asia-Pacific region is still in the shadow of flu A/H1N1 as nine more infection cases were confirmed in South Korea, China's Hong Kong and Australia on Saturday.
Early on Saturday, the South Korean health authority confirmed an American resident had been infected with the new type-A influenza virus. It is the fifth case of the virus confirmed in the nation.

US health officials said Saturday that swine flu was continuing to spread in the country, with the number of confirmed cases rising to 2,254, with 104 people hospitalized.
The cases were confirmed in 44 of the nation's 50 states and the capital Washington but health authorities were now focusing on the characteristics of the new virus and on developing a vaccine, said Anne Schuchat of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Makassar, South Sulawesi – Government hopes the Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) of bird flu virus specimen will be established on inter-government meeting of WHO member countries in Geneva, Switzerland next May.
“We will do our maximum effort to achieve agreement. Up to the present moment the dialogue is still tough”, said Public Health Division Special Staff of Health Minister, Widjaja Lukito while the Simulation of Bird Flu Pandemic Epicenter was ongoing in Kelurahan Kassi Kassi, Makassar, South Sulawesi, Saturday (25/4).
