Bird flu hits poultry in two Vietnam provinces

HANOI (Reuters) - Bird flu has spread to two more provinces in Vietnam, killing hundreds of chickens and ducks, the Agriculture Ministry said on Friday

Jakarta, August 22, 2007 - Ministry of Health – Test results from the Health Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Health and the Eijkman Insitute in Jakarta have confirmed that AS, a 28-year old female from Banjar Batu Gaing, Baraban, Kediri, Tabanan District in Bali is the most recent confirmed H5N1 case in Indonesia. In total, Bali has now recorded two cases, with two fatalities. Overall, Indonesia has now recorded 105 confirmed human H5N1 cases and 84 fatalities. The case fatality rate now stands at 80%.

Antigen Sparing Adjuvant Strategy Might Increase Avian Flu Vaccine Production

There is a strategy which could significantly boost the production of the avian influenza vaccine, allowing many more people to be vaccinated, according to an article in The Lancet. Professor Geert Leroux-Roels, Centre for Vaccinology, Ghent University and Hospital, Belgium and team said that if they combine the vaccine with an oil-in-water emulsion (adjudant) the body is able to produce six times as many avian flu neutralizing antibodies, compared to what the body can produce with a non-adjuvanted vaccine with an identical dose.

Woman's death marks Bali's first H5N1 case
