US gives additional US$38 million to help UN agency fight bird flu

ROME (AP) - The United States will contribute an additional US$38 million (¤26.76 million) to a U.N. program that works to control and prevent the spread of bird flu in animals worldwide, the U.N. food agency that runs the program said Wednesday.
With the new funds provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development, U.S. support
for the program will total US$63 million (¤44.37 million), the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization said.

Jakarta, October 14, 2007 - Bird Flu Information Center - Bird Flu claims another victim in Indonesia. IR, a 12-year old boy from Tangerang District, Banten province died on Saturday October 13, 2007.
A laboratory test results from the Ministry of Health's Research and Development Center dated October 10, 2007 confirmed that IR is positively infected by the H5N1 virus.

INDONESIA BIRD FLU DEATH TOLLS UP TO 87

Jakarta, October 9, 2007 - Ministry of Health -
Test results from the Health Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Health confirmed that LT, a 44-year old woman from Pekanbaru in Riau Province, Sumatra is infected with the H5N1 influenza virus. Overall, Indonesia has now recorded 108 confirmed human H5N1 cases and 87 fatalities. The case fatality rate now stands at 80.55%. Up to today, Riau Province has recorded 5 bird flu positive cases with 4 fatalities.

Bird flu returns to Vietnam

After months of no reported cases of avian influenza, ducks in Vietnam's Mekong Delta have tested positive for the virus, a local official said Thursday.

Fears of Indonesian human bird flu cluster recede

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Tests on Indonesian villagers suspected of being a cluster of human bird flu cases were negative for the feared virus, a health ministry official said Wednesday.

"Their results were all negative," said Momo, a Bird Flu Information Centre official, after tests on five people in Telaga Tujuh village, North Sumatra.

Eight suspected bird flu patients admitted to hospital in Medan

Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Some eight suspected bird flu patients were admitted to Adam Malik Hospital in the North Sumatran city of Medan on Sunday night, a hospital spokesman said on Monday.

The spokesman, M Nur Rasyid Lubis, said the condition of six of the patients has begun to improve while that of the two others, a pregnant women and a three-year old toddler, remained serious.

"The condition of the two other patients is still worrisome," Nur Rasyid said.

H5N1 mutation that could help spark pandemic identified

Oct 5, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – An international research team led by the University of Wisconsin at Madison (UW-Madison) has identified a key mutation that would arm the H5N1 avian influenza virus with one of the tools it needs to more easily infect and spread among humans.

AR, Newest Bird Flu Fatality in Jakarta

Jakarta, October 1, 2007 - Ministry of Health - Test results from the Health Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Health confirmed that a 21-year old man, known as "AR" from Cengkareng area in West Jakarta, is the most recent confirmed H5N1 case in Indonesia. Overall, Indonesia has now recorded 107 confirmed human H5N1 cases with 86 fatalities.
