More cases of a deadly strain of bird flu have been found at a poultry farm in Saudi Arabia just weeks before the Muslims flock to Mecca for the annual haj pilgrimage, the Ministry of Agriculture said yesterday.

WHO hopes to resolve row on bird flu virus sharing

Geneva (ANTARA News) - Health officials this week reopen the thorny issue of bird flu virus sharing, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) says is vital for tracking the deadly H5N1 virus and developing vaccines against a potential pandemic.

Bird flu death toll rises to 91

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A resident of Bengkalis in the Riau province, Sumatra, had died of bird flu recently raising the number of people in Indonesia who passed away after suffering from the disease to 91.

In a press statement on Monday the Indonesia health ministry stated that the victim had been declared positive with the H5N1 virus.

A laboratory test results from the Ministry of Health's Research and Development Center dated November 1, 2007 confirmed that ES (F, 30) from Tangerang Municipality, Banten Province is positively infected by the H5N1 virus. Another laboratory test from Jakarta-based Eijkman Institute is also required to confirm the test results. In almost all cases, the Eijkman's test results match the Litbangkes laboratory's test results.
