South China city reports suspected bird flu outbreak

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's southern city of Guangzhou has reported massive deaths of ducks in a village which are suspected to be a bird flu outbreak, according to information posted on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture.

RI to get $15 million from Japan to fight bird flu

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is to receive a Japanese grant worth US$15 million for its avian influenza eradication program, an Indonesian official said.

Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Shin Ebihara and the Foreign Affairs Ministry`s director general for Asia Pacific and Africa, Primo Alui Joelianto, signed a memorandum of understanding on the grant here Thursday.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the threat of avian flu in the Pacific region is as serious as ever.

Members of the WHO's western Pacific region are currently in South Korea to discuss ways to combat bird flu after reports that many countries do not have the minimum systems in place to deal with an outbreak.
