Bird flu death toll rises to 91

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A resident of Bengkalis in the Riau province, Sumatra, had died of bird flu recently raising the number of people in Indonesia who passed away after suffering from the disease to 91.

In a press statement on Monday the Indonesia health ministry stated that the victim had been declared positive with the H5N1 virus.

AROUND 5,000 birds are being slaughtered after avian flu was confirmed in turkeys on a farm south of the Border.

12:04 p.m. Avian influenza continues to worry the Asia Pacific region's health officials. "One of the greatest threats to the survival of the human race," is how Dr. David Nabarro, the senior UN Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza, told told reporters in Bangkok, and that while "Nations have made progress in containing the virus' spread, there remain some problem areas."
