NEW AVIAN INFLUENZA HUMAN CASE IN INDONESIA

Jakarta, January 21, 2008 - Bird Flu Information Center - An 8-year-old boy, identified only as St, a resident of Tangerang Municipality, Banten Province, has tested positive of H5N1. The boy showed his first symptoms on 7 January 2008 and then he was admitted to Cengkareng Hospital on 16 January 2008. Afterwards, he was transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital Sulianti Saroso (RSPI-SS) on17 January 2008, showing symptoms of fever, cough, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, pneumonia.

Kolkata, India - Villagers in eastern India are continuing to eat chickens killed by bird flu, prompting fears the country's worst-ever outbreak of the virus could worsen, an official said Monday.

UK - The British Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs has confirmed that a fifth mute swan collected on 14 January as part of wild bird surveillance from the same area has tested positive for highly pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza.
